Okay, so I know technically the end of June is the half way mark for the year, but there’s something about having a birthday in July that just always makes me feel like my birthday is slap bang in the middle of the year what do you mean the world doesn’t revolve around me?!
So I thought that since we’re stuck in the middle of the year somewhere it would be a really good opportunity to look back at those ten little goals I set myself back in the early hours of January. Have I completed any of them? Does it even still look possible that I can do them all? 10 things in 12 months doesn’t seem like much, but when you have the rest of life going on then it can seem almost impossible to squeeze things in sometimes!
Things That Are Going Well…
- Visit a country I’ve never been to before.
I don’t suppose that it’s really much of a surprise at this point that I managed to tick this one off pretty quickly when I visited Copenhagen in Denmark back in January. I’ve also been to Amsterdam in Holland which is another new country ticked off!
- Try a new sport.
Okay so I might have cheated at this one a little bit but as somebody who really hates sports I don’t know why I decided to put this one on the list – it must have been all that new year new me nonsense getting to my head. Back in February I went along to a taster session at Aviemore Bowling Club, and while I had tried bowls briefly before I had never really played a game like I did that night. I’ve also been attending yoga classes for a couple of weeks now which I’m going to count too even though I had done some yoga tasters in the past.
- Explore somewhere in my own country that I have never been to before.
Okay, so I don’t really think that I have done this one yet but there are plans in place for this for later in the year. I have visited a couple of attractions in Aviemore and Edinburgh that I had never been to before though, so does that count?
Things That Are Not Going Quite So Well…
- Learn a musical instrument, or at least dabble a little bit.
I own a ukelele and I have almost bought a recorder a couple of times, I just don’t know how to play them.
- Learn BSL or Makaton as well as one new spoken language.
Should really get on this, oops. I think I downloaded an app onto my tablet after posting the original 2019 goals post and then did nothing with it.
- Post something to somebody I care about at least once a month.
I think I have probably well and truly messed this one up – I was successful in January and February and I think that’s where the success probably ends. It’s obviously too late to try and fix things but maybe I can post out some spontaneous letters to make myself feel better.
- Learn how to play chess.
The problem with this one is that I need somebody who knows how to play chess and has a chessboard to teach me. So far, no luck (not that I’ve tried very hard).
- Spend more time reading books (and probably less time re-watching trash TV).
I have probably spent way more time watching trash TV and Netflix than I was when I wrote this post – oops. So far in 2019 I have physically read the grand total of…zero whole books. I have listened to a few audiobooks though, including most recently The Hidden Power Of F’cking Up and The Tattooist Of Auschwitz. It’s not quite the same, but it’s a pleasant change and I have been enjoying being absorbed back into the worlds of stories.
- Try to find a morning and/or night routine that works for me.
Okay so I did a whole bunch of research and I made a kind of plan and I bought some new products…and then I never implemented the routines. I guess this means I just never found one that works for me? Which was the whole aim really. I genuinely just wonder if I’m not cut out for routine – I tend to live a little spontaneously, impulsively and, for lack of a better word, erratically. Maybe I’m just not meant to have a routine…or maybe I’m just too lazy. Must try harder.
- Learn how to knit (or crochet or something like that).
I asked my Granny – a formerly avid knitter – if she would help me learn how to knit and she very enthusiastically agreed! That was back in January and so far I still don’t know how to purl one, or knit one, or not drop a stitch.
What do you think? Is there any hope for me to tick off everything on this list by the end of the year? I’d love to hear how you’re getting on with your own goals in the comments below! Also, if any of you think that you can help me to tick any of my goals off then please get in touch and help a girl out!
